Community Activism: An Allied Resistance

This is just the beginning. The Occupy Movement has the momentum to go far. However, the Occupy movement did not invent activism– communities have been actively resisting these same powers for hundreds of years.
Economic dominance by the 1% is made possible through the systematic division of our society. This division comes in the form of exclusion and privilege– the political and economic exclusion of whole communities. Through examining this exclusion, we begin to see the differences in privileges. The excluded communities are innumerable, though those hardest hit include: indigenous, black, immigrant, latino, queer, disabled, and women.

These communities have a long and continuing history of active resistance to the political and economic powers still ruling. If we are to change the system of inequality dominating our world, we must build alliances with these communities while critically examining the realities of this exclusion/privilege, in order to better understand the overall injustice affecting us all. We must learn from all these communities have to teach about resisting the powers that be.
This series will be lead each week by activists from the following communities – indigenous, black, immigrant, latino, queer, disabled, and women.

Every Tuesday – January 31 until March 13, 5:30p – 6:45p.
